Otago Museum embarked on an ambitious redevelopment plan in 1999 to restore this historic building and bring it firmly into the 21st century meeting collection care and visitor experience needs.

The redevelopment project cost $7.8 million and covered an area of 4,600m² comprising:

  • A new building expanding the floor areas on four levels on the northeast side of the existing museum housing new gallery space, special exhibitions gallery, multi-purpose theatre, exhibition preparation areas, workshop and collection storage with climate control system, seminar and meeting spaces.
  • Extensive alterations to the main entrance including construction of a central atrium through the full height of the centennial wing linking the themed galleries and providing public recreation space.

Rawlinsons Involvement

Rawlinsons involvement in the planning stages of the redevelopment included providing contract strategy advice, estimates, cost planning and value engineering advice to the museum management relating to internal projects linked into the overall redevelopment.

Our involvement continued through the construction phase with preparation of tender and contract documentation, analysis of tenders to jointly establish a guaranteed maximum price for the overall redevelopment and undertaking full construction cost and contract administration.
